Abstract

‘Health of the people’ is of vital importance to any nation as it directly affects its economy. With zeal of providing affordable and accessible healthcare to all citizens the healthcare delivery systems is faced with a new challenge of being self-sustaining and deliver quality patient care. One way of facing this is to have health-indicators or health instruments measuring the services of healthcare delivery. This shift to broader and more local approaches requires the development of new strategies, tools, and resources that are responsive to the needs of communities. Foremost among these is the need for relevant data that communities can use to assess and monitor local health and to guide program and policy development (Luck et al., 2006). The standards encourage an environment of Continual Quality Improvement (CQI) (Accreditation Standards for Hospitals. 2011). A good healthcare measurement system will associate patient outcomes with the performance and protocols of the system’s experts. The role of (CQI) towards helping the healthcare organization in delivering quality care yet ensuring self- sustainability is evaluated in this study. The study objective is to identify the role of CQI towards maintaining quality and sustainable solutions for a tertiary-level teaching hospital. The method adopted is identifying quality indicators that help measure structure-process-outcome in a service industry such as healthcare and its sustainability. The results showed an increase in outpatient traffic; initial assessment for emergency patients; documentation of care plan had achieved nearly 100%.There was a decrease in Hospital infection rates by nearly 3-5%. Laboratory and diagnostics performance increased by 20% and the percentage of redo’s dropped drastically. The hospital also showed a significant savings in terms of cost reduction. In conclusion the use of CQI in monitoring the activities of a healthcare industry has shown a beneficial effect in terms of maintaining quality, although these indicators may themselves are not sustaining but lead to sustainable outcomes.
