Abstract

Toothbrush is an absolute invention of all time, which plays ai very important role in maintaining the oral health with simplicity and its~ indispensability. The earliest description of a toothbrush was made in a;j Chinese historical work. dated to approximately 1600 BC. and with time' it has evolved into different design. texture. model. type and colour: coding. Oral hygiene aids help in removal of plaque preventing dental' caries and periodontal disease.Though toothbrushes aid in oral, hygiene. foremost care should be taken to disinfect the toothbrushas.' they act as a reservoir of microorganisms and possibly play an) important role in disease transmission.Therefore it becomes' imperative to take care of these oral hygiene aids with proper means of disinfection. Different modalities may be adopted to disinfect the, toothbrush and thereby prevent disease transmission. This review: intends to deliberate on the coexistent microbial cross contamination~ as well as methods of disinfection of toothbrush and to bring to light an, oft neglected area of toothbrush hygiene and its implications on' systemic. health. Further, the dental hygienist and the dentist.as. clinicians, are seemingly in an appropriate position to emphasize on'. these areas of concern and thus contribute towards welfare of society.
