Abstract

In a knowledge intensive sector such as a technical institution, human resource is the key resource. The importance of Knowledge Management (KM) as a strategic tool has been well recognized by organizations world wide in recent times. So, when KM and HRM are integrated it becomes a powerful tool towards strategic management. Globalization has forced organizations to adopt effective HRM practices to retain people and gain competitive advantage. People working in a technical Institution, both teaching and non-teaching faculties generate, disseminate and store knowledge. There is a need to have a system in place, which can capture this knowledge, both explicit and tacit and put it into an effective use so as to accomplish the strategic goals. Institutions should adopt the best possible HRM practices in terms of rewards, incentives, promotion etc., for managing knowledge in the most efficient manner to gain strategic competence. In this paper an attempt has been made to understand how HRM can help managing knowledge in a better way for achieving strategic competence. Issues related to HRM like recruitment, training, orientation, promotion, rewards etc., have been studied and linked to the process of KM. The paper deals in various phases, starting from the vision statement of the institute from which the objectives are drawn based on the core competencies within the organization and shows the linking of HRM and KM practices in reaching the short term and long term goals of the institute.
