Abstract
The printing industry uses large amount of inks and chemicals. This is a cause for concern, as it impacts the environment through the raw materials and the waste they generate. There is an increasing awareness for having environmental management systems by printers all over the world. The focus is on ‘sustainability’ and efforts are going on to adopt environment friendly systems. Accordingly printers all over the world are adopting environmental friendly practices, in order to reduce the impact of the processes on the environment and are trying to go ‘green’. In this context this paper discusses the role of environmental management in printing industries. A critical literature review highlights the issues in environmental management in printing industries and provides an overall perspective. The significance of Environmental Management System in going ‘green’ is discussed. Relevant case studies discussing different environmental initiatives are presented to highlight how conventional printing industries are going ‘green’ and a framework have been suggested to achieve sustainability in printing industries.
