Literature and case studies an filled with examples which emphasize the role of KM in transforming business towards excellenc and an overall improvement in quality. KM is also being applied to educational Institutions an, Universities in many countries all over the world. Technical Institutions in particular have lot a potential for KM application, as they generate not only trained technical manpower for the industries and businesses, but also generate and disseminate lot of knowledge. Hence there is a need for ~ proper framework for its understanding and analysis and then a roadmap for its effective implementation. The scale of implementation varies from the nature of Institutions - a degree leve Institution, offering undergraduate courses, an Institution offering post graduate courses or a full fledged technical Institution which performs all basic activities of teaching-learning, research and community development. This paper will try to understand and proposes two models - a KM model which emphasizes three important components namely People, Processes_ and Technology and another conceptual model which is for a business organization, with its basic elements and how the first KM model can be integrated with the second and a common unified framework can be evolved and used as a roadmap for effective KM implementation in a technical Institution for achieving excellence and quality improvement.
