Abstract

The objective of this work is to conduct a preliminary study on the natural radioactivity levels in the soil samples and estimate the radon/thoron exhalation rates in Manipal University premises, Southern Karnataka. 15 soil samples were collected from different locations in and around Manipal, and analyzed.The 238U,232Th and 40K concentrations were found to range from 8 ± 3 to 95 ± 9 Bq kg-1, 5 ± 3 to 74 ± 7 Bq kg-1 and 48 ± 15 to 236 ± 29 Bq kg-1 respectively. The radon and thoron exhalation rates from the soil samples were estimated using RAD7 (Durridge make) equipment. The radon and thoron xhalation rates were found to range from 14 ± 5 to 48 ± 5 mBq kg-1 h-1 and 54 ± 7 to 212 ± 17 Bqkg-1h-1 respectively. Good correlation was observed between 238U content and radon exhalation rate (R=0.83) as well as 232Th content and thoron exhalation rate (R= 0.95).
