Abstract

Observance of 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr Ambedkar & Celebration of Constitution Day by DAHS, WGSHA, Manipal University The Government of India declared November 26 as Constitution Day on 19 November 2015 by way of a gazette notification .The year of 2015 also witnessed the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar who had chaired the Constituent Assembly and played a pivotal role in the drafting of the Constitution. Department of Allied Hospitality Studies, WGSHA, Manipal University celebrated Constitution Day on 26th November 2015. It marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 which later came into effect on 26 January 1950. Prof Varadesh Hiregange, Director of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Manipal University was the chief guest of the function. Professor Hiregange delivered a special lecture on ‘outlining Indian Constitution ‘to the students of DAHS and council members of WGSHA and DACA. Professor Hiregange in his speech mentioned about Constitution Day celebrations and how does it revive its basic philosophy of building an egalitarian society without fear or bias and ensuring that the people elect the government of their choice. Professor Hiregange outlined the background of Indian constitution and the pivotal role played by Dr Ambedkar as the ‘chairman of the drafting Committee’. “When we celebrate Constitution Day we once again reaffirm our faith in those ideals”. He added. Prof Hiregange said “Fundamental rights are necessary because they did not only provide security and equality to all citizens, but also ensure the all-round development of the individual and thus the development of the nation”. He has also stressed on the role of judiciary and legislation, preambles and the fundamental rights in Indian constitution. Athira Nair of DAHS presented a brief history constitution and the life story of Dr B R Ambedkar. Coordinator of DAHS P Valsaraj, Faculty members, Students and council members of WGSHA, DAHS and DOCA were also present.
