Abstract

In present day, 6061 aluminium alloy has globallycaptivated the attention ofengineers and researchers as superior structural material for various applications in sectors such as automotive and aerospace industries. Nevertheless, it is vital to enhance the mechanical strength and the formability of these aluminum alloys for further applications. The effect of low temperature thermomechanical treatment (L TMT) on the mechanical properties of 6061 aluminium alloy wasinvestigated. AA6061 was subjected to sequence of heat treatment processes such as solution treatment, rolling and artificial ageing which are collectively known as LTMT wherein the rolling was done to reduce the thickness of the specimen by 20%, 25% and 30% respectively. From the experiment the peak hardness and tensile strength of the alloy for different deformations were obtained. The results show a considerable increase in the tensile strength and hardness values for the thermomechanically treated alloy as compared to as cast aluminium alloy.
