Roadway lighting comprises a large portion of global electricity usage. One of the most common modes of roadway lighting is high mast lighting. At present high mast lighting systems rely on High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps. Significant light from the HID lamps is lost or uncontrolled in traditional luminaires. The proposed luminaire is developed using Philips Lumileds LEDs. With the use of high precision optics the luminaire directs the entire light into the area under consideration. The advanced thermal, optical and electrical design of the luminaire enables it to provide elevated energy savings, reduced maintenance costs, refined visual environment, improved safety measures, and reduced light pollution. The first section of the paper analyzes a conventional roadway high mast installation and the lighting requirements. The second section addresses the complete designaspects of the LED high mast luminaire including LED count, LED selection, thermal profile, optical analysis and driver topology
