Abstract

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is a form of developmental language disorder occurring in the absence of mental retardation, sensory deficits, neurological damage, emotional problems and environmental deprivation. The present study aimed to develop bilingual test batteries for SLI in Kannada and Malayalam languages, as few assessment batteries are available for assessing SLI in the Indian context. The participants consisted of two groups of children in the age range of 4-8 years. Group I consisted of 160 Kannada speaking and 160 Malayalam speaking typically developing children and Group II consisted of 20 children who were diagnosed to have SLI. The study was carried out in three phases. Phase I included development of test battery in Kannada, Malayalam and English. Phase II included standardization of the test battery. In Phase III, the test battery was administered on children with SLI. The results revealed that age has a significant effect on task performance whereas no effect was noted for gender. Children performed poorly on all tasks in English when compared to Kannada and Malayalam indicating the influence of language proficiency on task performance. These test batteries would help in the identification and diagnosis of SLI in Kannada-English and Malayalam-English bilingual population
