The synthesis of metal and semiconductor nanoparticles is a growing research area with potential applications for novel technologies. In general, nanoparticles are prepared predominantly by chemical methods that are not environmentally friendly. This article aims to review the biological synthesis of nanomaterials using bio-templates such as bacteria, fungi and plant extract. The biosynthesis of nanomaterials is eco-friendly, rapid and cost effective. The bio-templates assisted nanomaterial synthesis has been described in brief, focusing on procedure as well as characterization techniques of nanomaterials. The biosynthetic mechanism of nanomaterials has been described in two aspects: microorganism and plant extract mediated synthesis.
