The Static and Dynamic characteristics of water lubricated journal bearings with five axial grooves are obtained theoretically. The bearing is supplied with water from one end. In the clearance space of the bearing water is subjected to both velocity and pressure induced flow. The Reynolds equation is solved numerically by a finite difference method satisfying the boundary conditions. Dynamic characteristics are obtained in terms of stiffness and damping coefficients using first-order perturbation method to ascertain the stability of the system. As expected load carrying capacity and stability is better in smaller groove angles. The data obtained from the above analysis can be used conveniently in the design of such bearings as these are presented in dimensionless form.
