Abstract

The purpose of this work is of environmentally preferable lubricants that may be used as a best management practice. Lubricant is typical water based biodegradable lubricant available in the market. The steady state characteristics of water based lubricated journal bearings having 3 axial grooves are obtained theoretically. The lubricant is fed under pressure from one end of the bearing, through the 3 axial grooves (groove angles may vary). The Reynolds equation is solved numerically by the finite difference method satisfying the boundary conditions. The load capacity, attitude angle, volume flow rate and friction variable are compared for various bearing number and eccentricity ratios with that of the 3 axial groove water lubricated bearings, assuming linear pressure drop along the groove. The water based lubricant shows that there is a significant difference in the static characteristics. The load carrying capacity is better in smaller groove angles when compare it with higher groove angle
