Abstract

The Dynamic characteristics of water based lubricated journal bearings with multiple axial grooves are obtained theoretically. The bearing is supplied with water based lubricant from one end. In the clearance space of the bearing the lubricant is subjected to both velocity and pressure induced flow. The Reynolds equation is solved numerically by a finite difference method satisfying the boundary conditions. Dynamic characteristics are obtained in terms of stiffness and damping coefficients using first-order perturbation method to ascertain the stability of the system. In this paper a study has been made to obtain the dynamic characteristics for linear pressure drop in the grooves. It is observed that the stability is better in water based lubricant when compared with water lubricated bearings.
