Abstract

The Stability characteristics of water based lubricated journal bearings with three axial grooves are obtained theoretically. The bearing is supplied with water based lubricant from one end. In the clearance space of the bearing the lubricant is subjected to both velocity and pressure induced flow. The Reynolds equation is solved numerically by a finite difference method satisfying the boundary conditions. The static and dynamic characteristics are obtained in terms of load carrying capacity, attitude angle, volume flow rate, friction variable, stiffness and damping coefficients, mass parameter and whirl ratio for smaller groove angle using first order perturbation method to ascertain the stability of the system. In this paper a study has been made to obtain the stability for constant pressure in the grooves. It is observed that the stability is better when compared this with higher groove angle
