Earthquakes are one of the most destructive forces that nature unleashes on earth. They not only cause loss of life and property but also shake the morale of the people. A large proportion of the world’s population lives in regions of seismic hazard, at risk from earthquakes of varying severity and varying frequency of occurrence. Not a single year passes without some part of the world being affected by an earthquake. With today’s crowded environment of people and buildings, the destruction can be devastating. Since earthquakes are so far unpreventable and unpredictable, the only way is to design and build the structures in such a manner that the loss of property and life can be minimized. In recent years, structural engineers have been giving more and more attention to the design of structures for earthquake resistance
