Abstract

Open innovation is one of the new strategies being explored by organization. It is a new concept defined by Mr. Henry Chesbrough in 2003. Though, open innovation was adopted and practiced earlier, framework of the term was conceptualized by Mr. Henry Chesborough. Earlier strategic approach focused on restricting competition through erecting barriers across stakeholders in the industry and ensuring that resources of innovation is internally driven . . However, in recent past it has been noticed that the organizations which are engaging in open innovation have better growth as compared to other organizations. Innovation is not just driven by internal resources, but also by external resources. This approach is more relevant for software applications. GNU,a project started in 1980's is an illustration of open innovation. The stated objective of GNU project was to make software applications available to customers at no cost. A group of developers who had interest in developing applications joined together and developed applications. All these developers exchanged their innovative ideas in developing applications. The source code of applications developed by this group was made accessible to everyone. The applications developed by this group were Open Source Applications. This group of developers was an open group. Anyone who has interest in software development could be part of this group. A few of the well known open source applications are Linux, Apache and Android. The growth and acceptance of open source applications in the organization has been phenomenal. There have been many agreements and disagreements on relevance of open innovation for software applications. The current study proposes to analyze open source operating system products' growth and analyzes their relevance to open innovation strategy
