Abstract

The outright disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) in the open ground leads to air, water and land pollution. In addition to the landfilling technique for their disposal,municipal solid waste offers various alternatives for recovering resources in various ways. They are incineration, refuse derived fuel (RDF) preparation. pyrolysis, cornposting.biogas generation, landfill gas utilisation, hydrolysis, biopressing, neutralysis, low BTI:Jgas generation etc., In addition to the above, recovery of valuables such as paper. plastic, metallics, glass is a common practice. This paper will briefly highlight the various techniques employed for utilising the municipal solid waste for resource recovery with spcciul rcfcrcncc to Indian scenario. A case study of ~ plant being setup at Bombay by ivI/s. CMC Ltd .. Bangalorc for producing gO tonnes per day refuse derived fuel pellets for Department of Science and Technology from Municipal solid waste is also included.
