Abstract

The need for light weight structures with high performance capability have stimulated the development of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Main applications of CFRP composites are in aircraft, spacecraft, automobile, marine, sports equipment etc. The manufacturing process adopted in the present study is hand lay-up process, followed by the compression molding technique. The mechanical characterization of uni-directional carbon fiber reinforced polymer (UD CFRP) composite laminates are carried out as per ASTM standards. The experimentally determined mechanical properties of UD CFRP composite is validated by using finite element method (FEM). The examination shows that the experimental and the FEM validated results of mechanical properties are in moral closeness.
