Abstract

III the present investigation, attempts are made to formulate criteria for evaluation of inferior clay from Kund:tput Taluk of Udupi District for manufacturing Mangalore tiles. The clay available is deficient in desirable properties required in the manufacture of tiles. Incinerated Sludge Ash ([SA) whic.h is available in iarge quantities in the country as a waste from chemical industry is used as an admixture along with a small percentage of cement and liP.:1eto improve the index and strength properties of the clay available for the manufacture of tiles. An attempt is made to carry out an investigation to study the strength behavior of clay by blending with ISA. In order to improve its plastic behavio. and to make clay-ISA mixture more plastic, an experimental investigation is also carried out by blending the clay-IS/\. rnixt'ure with cement and lime (I %,3% and 5%). With the additioll of 15% lSA to problem clay there is ar. increase in the unsonfined comrrcs:;i\'e str'ength from 56.8! kN/m" to 354.51 kN/m". And also there is improvement in the plastic property of the soil when a small percentage of lime and cement is mixed to the 15% ISA . blended clay.
