Abstract

In the present investigation, attempts are made to formulate criteria for evaluation of inferior clay from Kundapur Taluk of Udupi District for manufacturing Mangalore tiles. It is also proposed to study the effect of Incinerated Sludge Ash (ISA), a waste from chemical industry, on strength of inferior clay for the production of Mangalore tiles. The main objective of the investigation is to evaluate optimum ISA content (5% to 25%) for stabilization of the clay from the view point of plasticity, permeability and strength characteristics. The results showed that the strength of the soil increased from 90.36 kN/m2 to 354.51 kN/m2 after 7 days of curing when the soil is blended with 15% ISA content.
