The telluro cluster Fe3Te2(CO)9 has been used as a starting block for the synthesis of a number of mixed metal complexes of the general form Fe2MTe2(CO)6(PPh3)2, M = Pt, Pd, Ni, as well as a novel higher nuclearity telluro ruthenium cluster. The mechanism in a majority of the reactions of Fe3Te2(CO)9 involves the formation of the adduct Fe3Te2(CO)9L, L = CO, PPh3. The adduct readily undergoes substitution of the Fe(CO)3L fragment by incoming, new metal fragments. The reactive dinuclear molecule, Fe2Te2(CO)6 readily addscoordinatively unsaturated triosmium or triruthenium fragments to give the novel clusters, Fe2Os3Te2(CO)17 and Fe2Ru3Te2(CO)17. The activation of carbene ligands on Fe2Te2(CO)6(CH2)2 has been studied and the new bis methylidine complex, Fe2Te2(CO)6(CH2)2 has been prepared.
