Abstract

The present study concentrates on a non-conventional approach in design of a solar powered aircraft considering the initial departures and the challenges faced during the development of Solar powered Vehicles from its initial steps. This approach finds its roots from the fields of Aerodynamics and Aerostatics. In contrast to airships with wings, this design comprises of a semi-rigid inflatable structure with flexible solar panels mounted on the skin with an optimized foldable design. The propulsive attributes of the vehicle have been derived, keeping in mind, the constraints such as Solar Energy Availability and Conversion Efficiency of a Solar cell. The above vehicle can revolutionize flying in terms of efficiency, cruising speed, durability and can support a greener tomorrow by lower emissions. Solid Edge by Siemens has been considered for basic designing of this aircraft. Aerodynamic analysis of the vehicle has been based on literature study and the results will be presented in the context of the Solar Powered Flight
