Abstract

Since the beginning of human civilization, artificial lighting has been an important commodity for human social and economic activities. However, over two billion people in the world are still living without access to electricity. Almost all of these live in developing countries, with four out of five such people living in rural areas. India is one such country, where fuel based lighting is the only option to meet the lighting needs. Although the Electricity Act, 2003 laid emphasis on rural electrification through Rajiv Gandhi Gram Vidyut Yojna, the act has failed in its implementation. People in remote areas use kerosene and precious trees as firewood on open fire places at their homes for cooking, lighting and room heating. This has a direct impact on their health, leading to chronic problems resulting in low life expectancy and high death rates of young children. Efficient use of available renewable resources and adoption of contextualized technologies are essential for sustainable development of rural India. Solar energy based white L.E.D lighting has already shown its applicability in these circumstances and is the best bet towards improving the living conditions of rural India by providing quality green illumination. This papers aims to compare the kerosene lanterns with solar L.E.D lanterns while also trying to establish the overall cost impact of both the lanterns through life cycle cost analysis. Further, a part of an ongoing study has been presented to establish the impact of quality of illumination on the Human Development Index of a community
