Abstract

One of the important element of a control system is stepper motor mainly as it is a direct digital actuator. This paper aims at providing a detailed exposure to a stepper motor model which is suited for motorization requirement in space mechanism. The main applications that are considered are slow speed or quasi-steady state and accurate positioning, They are mainly based on open loop and close loop control. This paper also reports comparison between open loop and closed loop steppermotor. The issues regarding loss of synchronization can beminimized by utilizing closed-loop position control in present open-loop stepping motor systems at a comparatively less expense. A lot of applications are available where the position tracking systems with stepper motor are available, to mention some like pointing an antenna aiming a desired location so that the depointing losses can be minimized or for tracking a star/planet moving a telescope etc. Stepper motor position is known simply by keeping track of the number of input step pulses. The paper discusses about the position tracking system using a stepper motor and its simulations for varying rates in and the results for the responses are presented.
