Abstract

All process industries work for long hours over a 24-hour period thereby necessitating continuous and reliable requirement of electrical power. With the increasing load demand by various sectors, there is a problem of power systems being overloaded at regular intervals. With the increasing usage of power electronic and time varying loads, the quality of power available for utilization has become an area of significant concern especially for industrial consumers. This paper briefly reviews the area of power quality (PQ), the types, causes and effects of varying PQ, the standards of reference and also the solutions towards mitigating the power quality problems. Emphasis is placed on voltage variation and unbalance which is one of the most commonest problem faced by industrial utilities
