Abstract

The increasing demand-supply energy gap has put more stress on the already existing depleting fossil fuel resources. This has led to the fear of exhaustion of these energy sources in the present century itself. In order to prolong its availability, generation of electrical energy through the use of renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, energy from biomass and biogas, tidal energy, hydropower, geothermal energy etc has gained considerable importance. Due to the abundant availability of solar energy throughout the year, technological ways and means should be developed to tap this natural resource for energy generation. Photovoltaic modules or panels are made of semiconductor material that allows sunlight to be converted directly into electricity. These modules provide a safe, reliable, maintenance-free and environmentally friendly source of electrical power for a very long time that suits a wide range of applications. Grid connected PV systems allows to reduce the electricity consumption from the grid and distinguish themselves through the lack of a need fro an energy storage device such as a battery. Also, no storage of electrical power during nighttime and non-sunshine days is required as the power generated can be fed directly to the electrical grid. This paper discusses the design, development and implementation strategies of a grid connected photovoltaic system that allows the direct connection of the solar module to the electrical grid.
