Abstract

: Beaches and coastal lowlands undergo a continuous change due to the ocean processes such as waves, near shore currents, tides as well as the sub aerial processes such as rainfall, sun, wind etc. The coastal sand movement which is prominent during major storms poses extreme danger to man-made structures near the coast. In the present study, particle size characterizations of beach sediments along Udupi coast are carried out. The prime objective of this study is to identify the textural behavior of beach sediments based on the grain size parameters. To achieve the above objective, tri-plot analysis is performed. Grain size characteristics such as mean size, sorting, kurtosis and skewness are estimated using GRADISTAT. Maximum frequency distribution of sediment samples lie between the range of medium sand and fine sand. In the present investigation, the entire study area is characterized into well sorted, moderately well sorted and moderately sorted sediment environments. Sediments are also identified as fine skewed or coarse skewed with platykurtic, mesokurtic and leptokurtic characters. It is concluded that the beach erosion, accretion, and stability of beaches are controlled by strong hydrodynamic and hydraulic processes and are highly significant in influencing the textural behavior
