Abstract

In this communication ,the effect of electron beam(EB) irradiation on the structural,electrical transport and thermal properties of Pr0.8Sr0.2MnO3 manganites has been investigated. Rietveld refinement ofXRD data reveals that all samples are single phased withorthorhombicdistortedstructure(Pbnm). It is ob- served that the orthorhombicdeformationincreaseswith EB dosage. TheMn–O–Mn bondangleis found to increase with increase in EB dosage, presumably due to strain in duced by the seirradiations. Analysis on themeasuredelectricalresistivitydataindicatesthatthesmallpolaronhoppingmodelisoperativein the hightemperatureregionforpristineaswellas EB irradiatedsamples.Theelectricalresistivityinthe entire temperatureregionhasbeensuccessfully fitted withthephenomenologicalpercolationmodel which isbasedonphasesegregationofferromagneticmetallicclustersandparamagneticinsulating regions. TheSeebeckcoefficient (S) ofthepristineaswellastheirradiatedsamplesexhibitpositive values,indicatingthatholesisthedominantchargecarriers.TheanalysisofSeebeckcoefficient data confirms thatthesmallpolaronhoppingmechanismgovernsthethermoelectrictransportinthehigh temperatureregion.Inaddition,Seebeckcoefficient dataalsoiswell fitted withthephenomenological percolation model.Thebehaviorinthermalconductivityatthetransitionisascribedtothelocalan- harmonic distortionsassociatedwithsmallpolarons.Specific heatmeasurementindicatesthatelectron beam irradiationenhancesthemagneticinhomogeneityofthesystem
