Abstract

Since many years Post-earthquake damage assessment has been one of the preliminary steps for the establishment of a proper reconstruction strategy. At the same time, such damage assessments can be used in controlling or minimizing damage or loss from future earthquakes, developing an efficient warning system. Observations of structural and non-structural damages after severe earthquakes exhibit interdependency between the seismic parameters and the structural response.Estimating ground-motion characteristics for seismic risk assessment and earthquake-resistant design requires the clear definition of parameters that reflect the destructive potential of the motion. Performance based design of structures requires the identification of critical indices of damage. Damages are then correlated with key ground motion parameters. For the effectiveness of such earthquake damage assessment, ground-motion parameters like peak ground acceleration, peak ground velocity and peak ground displacement can be utilized in the analysis of seismogram.This paper addresses the correlations of peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV) and peak ground displacement (PGD) obtained from seismograms of different past earthquakes with the resulting damage. For this purpose, all three (East – West, North – South and Up – down) components of strong motion accelerograms from different sites were subjected to base line corrections, band pass filtering, integrations and other relevant analysis using SeismoSignal, a software developed by Seismosoft for the purpose of ground-motion characterization.
