Abstract

Adaptability to sustain different environmental conditions and relative ease of usage makes the hybrid composite material as a viable alternative to conventional materials. Hybrid composites exhibit properties like less cost, ease of design and flexibility in manufacturing. Present study involves mechanical characterization of banana/glass as reinforcements in Cashew Nut Shell Liquid/Polyester Matrix composites. Composite laminates of three varieties viz. banana fibre woven mat, glass fibre woven mat and combination of banana/glass woven mats were fabricated using hand layup and compression moulding technique. Experiments in accordance with ASTM standards were performed. Results indicate that hybrid composite exhibited better strength characteristics over banana fibre reinforced composite but lower properties than glass fibre reinforced composite.
