Abstract

Background/Objectives: Case-Based Learning (CBL) is a clinical oriented pedagogical approach and curriculum design methodology often used in medical education. In this learning is driven by challenging, open-ended problems pertaining to a specific case. Aim: The present study aimed at understanding the learning approaches of undergraduate dental students in a CBL oriented curriculum in a dental school in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka, India Methods/Statistical analysis: This study was conducted among final-year dental students between June and November 2015. CBL was introduced to this batch for a term of six months and then we collected their feedback on this innovative teaching method after taking permission from Institutional Ethics Committee. The present study aimed at understanding the learning approaches of undergraduate dental students in a CBL oriented curriculum in a dental school in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka, India Findings: A total of 102 students took part in the survey and returned their filled feedback form. Around 50% of our subjects felt that it was good (n=53) and they also agreed that CBL was a good method of learning. Application/Improvements: CBL helped improve knowledge of students in comparison to those exposed only to didactic lectures. As CBL enabled students to identify the gaps in their knowledge and enhanced their group functioning and generic skills, we recommend CBL sessions as a mode of learning in dental education.
