Abstract

Advancements in the materials optimize utilization of energy in property enhancement processes, improve system efficiency, extend lifetime, and reduce CO2 emissions. Although initially developed for a specific application, material properties may crosscut to other energy technologies or industries. Aluminum alloys are the promising materials in the present manufacturing era and are in need of new developments to obtain the required improvements for the new generation of automotive and aerospace applications. In the work presented here, investigations are carried out to find out the effect of grain refinement (by Al- 3Ti and Al-3B) and modification (by Al-10Sr) of Forged A356 alloy. The effects are studied on the mechanical properties of forged A356 alloy, which are strongly dependent on the grain refinement and modification. The result shown that a reduction in the size of α-Al dendrites, modification of eutectic Silicon and improvement in the mechanical properties are observed with the addition of grain refiner and modifier either by individual addition or in combination. The change in the microstructure from coarse columnar α-Al dendrites to fine equiaxed dendrites and plate like eutectic silicon to rounded particles leads to improved mechanical properties
