There is a huge demand for online variable data printing using inkjet printing process. When there is a necessity of using low grade paper to reduce the paper cost, as well as when printing in-line with conventional processes, use of water-soluble dye-based inks used in inkjet printing, results in feathering or colour bleeding. This is because of the poor water resistance of low grade paper compared to the grade of paper recommended for inkjet printing. To overcome this problem, there is a need to modify the surface of such papers so as to decrease the interaction of water-soluble dye-based ink. In this study different solvent based coating formulations have been prepared for surface modification of such papers. The study has identified the best coating, by comparing the print results before and after surface modification and also with the results obtained on inkjet print recommended paper.
