Wound healing is a complex process that involves a series of intricate biochemical reactions. The present study aims at developing composite films using polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan. Usually, the composites suffer with poor mechanical strength and therefore it is imperative to cross-link the film with potential cross-linkers. Composite films were developed using solvent casting method and cross-linked with 1% (w/v) of genipin. The films were characterized using FTIR and SEM. Mechanical testing and swelling studies were also performed to study the strength and water uptake properties of the composite films. FTIR analysis indicated that cross-linking occurred in the film. Mechanical testing of the films showed that there was a marked increase of 67.2% in tensile stress of the genipin cross-linked films as compared to its uncross-linked counterpart. Further, swelling studies proved that the cross-linked films had lesser swelling compared to the uncross-linked films. The films were finally tested in-vivo using Albino Wistar rats to evaluate the effectiveness of the films on a wound. Results indicate that the cross-linked films promote faster wound healing, thus making the films to be an effective candidate for wound healing management
