Abstract
The article presents the design and implementation of a multi-loop PID controller for a pilot plant distillation column, based on the Multi-Scale Control (MSC) technique. Designing an effective multi-loop PID controller is challenging because of the interactions and dead time. The main feature of this multi-scale control scheme is its communicative structure, which enables communication among all the sub-controllers in the system. This scheme reduces the interaction leading to improved control performance and robustness. Moreover, it is an organized method to design a multi-loop based PID controller. Further, its effectiveness and applicability is demonstrated both in simulation and real- time environment using MATLAB/Simulink
