The small-scale printing industry in India is currently facing enormous challenges from the customers, workers and vendors. The competition has forced the printers to give the quality product at lower cost, while compromising on the profit margin. Hence, to uplift such industry, in this review paper a novel approach called ‘Total Production Management’ is discussed. Methodology – The paper systematically categorises the research in the area of printing technology and production management, analyses and reviews it systematically. Findings – The paper reveals the critical benefits of Total Production Management and its influence on print performance parameters such as cost, quality and delivery. Practical implications – This model helps the printers in the small-scale industry to optimise the system and increase profit margin. Originality – This is a review paper containing a comprehensive listing of publications in the area of TPM, TQM, Contextual Variables and Human Factors.
