Continuous attempts are being done to reduce the greenhouse gasses and to improve the energy efficiency of the vehicles. Reduction in body weight of the structures and vehicles will not only make the body construction energy efficient but also cost effective. The reduction in weight of the component will reduce its strength, stiffness and energy absorbing capacity. The application of sandwich panels is increasing rapidly in construction, shipping, aerospace and automotive sectors. Sandwich panels are light in weight and rigid in construction. Increased use of sandwich materials in industry necessitate more insight in to its mechanical properties and physical behavior. This paper reviews the recent developments in composite sandwich panels in particular to the materials, properties, bonding, durability and damage tolerance. The mechanical properties such as flexural and impact of various sandwich materials are discussed.
