Abstract
Effectiveness of Embankment constructed on soft soil ameliorated with naturally available coir is analyzed. Finite element method (FEM) is used for the analysis. The embankment, foundation soil and coir are modeled using four noded plane strain element. The effective permeability of coir is modeled using area replacement ratio. The settlement of the soil below the embankment at the end of consolidation and the variation of settlement of soil at the ground surface below the embankment at various time interval are studied. It is concluded from the study that natural drains made up of coir are effective to reduce the settlement of the embankment.
