Abstract

Abstract—Model based control algorithms are implemented when traditional control algorithms are inappropriate and fails o produce effective results. Smith predictor is an effective ontrol structure to control process with high dead time. In this ork, real time Smith Predictor algorithm is implemented to ontrol a high dead time interacting tank process using abVIEW. It requires a good knowledge about the process to xtract the mathematical model. The model requires to capture he entire dynamics of the process so as to make the control lgorithm more effective. In this work, open loop analysis is arried out to understand the dynamics of the plant and the odel is extracted using empirical method. A first order plus ead time model (FOPDT) is considered and Smith Predictor tructure is implemented to control the process. It is observed hat the traditional PID control produces a sustained oscillation ecause of high dead time and Smith Predictor based control for he same PID parameters produces an effective control of the rocess
