Abstract

A patient’s physical activity (PA) level is quite clinically significant in identifying sedentary behavior and associated cardiovascular risk. Although PA level may be related to many disorders, chronic metabolic disease such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is more significant than others when measuring for cardiovascular risk in the Indian population. The main aim of our study was to estimate levels of PA using both objective and subjective tools in patients with T2DM. Our objective measurement was made with the GT3X triaxial accelerometer, and subjective measurement was performed using a Global PA Questionnaire (GPAQ). The mean PA for all participants was 1.63 ± 0.28 metabolic equivalents (MET)/min/wk, and most patients were classified as engaging in low PA. Total time spent in lighter activities (135.28 ± 62.39 ) was greater than time spent in moderate (107.44 ± 99.45) and vigorous (28.07 ± 10.27) activities. We found statistical significance (p = 0.04) and moderate correlation (r = 0.406) between use of the accelerometer and GPAQ. In the present study, we found the accelerometer to be an effective tool for measuring duration and level of PA in individuals with T2DM.
