Abstract

The exhaust manifold geometry of vehicles plays a very crucial role in engine performance. Choking or back pressures because of minor losses can cause a reduction in engine efficiency, increases noise and causes non-uniform cooling. The manifold design is good when the loss in energy in the manifold is kept to a minimum and the velocity profile of the fluid entering the turbo charger is kept as uniform as possible. It will be done so with the help of vortex generators. Experimental and numerical analysis is carried out on sudden expanding pipe with different configuration of the vortex generators. Right triangle, isosceles triangle and rectangular shape vortex generators effects on fluid flow near the expansion zone is studied. Numerically different turbulent models are tested by validating with the experimental results and suitable turbulent model is suggested. Improvement in the performance of the system with vortex generators is calculated
