Gestures originate from any bodily motion or state but commonly originate from the face and hand. Current focuses in the field includes emotion recognition from the face and hand gesture recognition. Many approaches have been made using camera and computer vision algorithms to interpret sign language. Gesture recognition enables humans to communicate with the machine (HMI) and interact without any mechanical devices. The main objective of this work is to design a FPGA based hand gesture recognition system. FPGA makes the system fast and efficient. Image acquisition is done with digital camera. The acquired image is then processed using efficient algorithm. Edge detection and feature extraction is done further to identify the gestures. The image of required gestures are all stored and then compared with the features extracted from the captured images. Accordingly, audio and visual output is generated. This will help in establishing the communication between the speech impaired people and the common people
