Abstract

Seismic response of a multi- storey plane frame structure resting on laminated rubber bearing, subjected to El Centro earthquake ground motion are studied by considering all the three degrees of freedom (two translations along x and y –axes and one rotation about z-axis) at each node. A Step –by –step Newmark’s methods is adopted to solve the equation of dynamic equilibrium. Comparison of response is made in terms of displacements and forces in order to investigate the effectiveness of the isolation system. The response of isolated system is found to be less in comparisons to the corresponding response without isolation system. Implying that the isolation is quite effective in reducing forces of the system. It is also found that the displacement at top and base of the isolated structure are almost same at all time intervals. This indicates that the structure moves rigidly during an earthquake.
