Abstract

Inthisstudy,mechanicalcharacteristicsofBorassusflabelliferfruitfibrereinforcedpolyester compositeswithvaryingweightpercentagesofthecarbonizedeggshellbio-fillerswereanalyzedforits tensile,flexuralandimpactstrength.Toestablishthesuccessofcarbonizationofegg-shell,Energy Dispersivex-raySpectroscopyanalysiswascarriedout.Thefibreswereinitiallytreatedwithsodium hydroxidefordurationof1h,2hand3handwerelatertreatedwithpotassiumpermanganate.Tensile strengthoftreatedfibresweredeterminedandcomparedwithuntreatedfibres.Thefibrewiththe higheststrengthwasselectedasreinforcementforthecomposites.ScanningElectronMicroscopewas usedtoevaluatethechangesonthesurfaceoffibresduetothechemicaltreatment.Composites fabricatedweretestedforitsmechanicalproperties.Resultsshowthattheadditionofbio-fillerhada positiveeffectonthemechanicalpropertiesofthecompositestillacertainproportionofbio-filler afterwhichitdropped.ThefracturedsurfacewasanalysedusingaScanningElectronMicroscopeto understandthevariousmodesoffailure
