Abstract
Introductionandobjectives:Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoobservetheevolutionofgeno-toxicity(micronucleation,binucleationandmultinucleation)fromnormaltoperiodontallycompromisedgingivalepithelium(gingivitisandperiodontitis)andtocomparetheseverityofdamage.Methodsandmaterial:45participantsformed3differentcategories;acontrolgroupof15healthysubjects,15subjectswithgingivitisand15withchronicperiodontitis.Smearswerecollectedfromallthegingivaandstainedwithacridineorangestain.Atotalof500cellswereevaluatedunderfluorescentmicroscopyfornuclearabnormalitiessuchasmicronuclei,binucle-ationandmultinucleation.ThestatisticalanalysisusedwasonewayANOVAandposthocTukeytest.Resultsandconclusion:Astatisticallysignificantdifferencewasobservedwhentheageofthe3groupswerecompared(p=0.002);thecontrolgroupwereyoungerthanthosewithchronicperiodontitisorgingivitis.Withrespecttogenotoxicchanges,thedifferencesforbinuclea-tion(p=0.002)andmultinucleation(p<0.001)werestatisticallysignificantthussuggestingadvanceddamageinthenucleus.Suchchangesingenotoxicitycouldbeofhelptoaclinicianindeterminingprognosis.
