Abstract

Response of a four-storey plane frame structure having three degrees of freedom (two translations along x,y – axes and one rotation about z –axis) at each node, with multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD) on its top, subjected to EI Centro earthquake ground motion is studied. The total degrees of freedom of the uncontrolled structure (without MTMD) in this idealization are 3 x N , where N is the number of nodes. A Step-by step Newmarks method is adopted to solve the equation of dynamic equilibrium. Comparison of response is made in terms of displacement and forces in order to investigate the effectiveness of the MTMD. The response of structure with MTMD is found to be less in comparison to the corresponding response without MTMD, implying that the MTMD are effective in reducing the forces and displacement of the structure.
