Abstract

The effect of isolating a structure using an elastomeric seismic isolation bearing is studied. A seismic isolation bearing proposed by Nagarajaiah and Keith is used to isolate the structure. The bearing consists of natural rubber and steel shims A space frame is mounted on this bearing and is subjected to a £1 Centro ground motion. The frequency of vibration. displacements, acceleration and forces induced are computed by finite element method of analysis. Since the mathematical model of bearing is In incremental form, a nonlinear analysis has been used. The frame is also analysed assuming the base of the frame as fixed. The results obtained from the analysis of the frame with these two support conditions are compared to study the effect of isolating the structure using elastomeric bearing.
