Effect of different modifiers on mechanical and radiation shielding properties of SrO-B2O3-TeO2 glass system

Abstract

Four glasses coded SBT-V, SBT-Mn, SBT-Mo, and SBT-Tl having the –composition 10SrO-35B2O3- 35TeO2-20 V2O5/MnO2/MoO3/Tl2O3 were fabricated by the melt quench technique and inves�tigated for their mechanical and radiation shielding qualities. The SBT-Tl glass showed the highest density of 5.1024 g/cm3 , while the SBT-V glass had the least density of 3.6875 g/cm3 . The SBT-Tl glass exhibited elastic constants viz., Young’s modulus, bulk modulus, shear modulus, and longitudinal modulus respectively of 39, 24, 16, and 45 GPa. The elastic moduli of this glass were comparable to the TeO2-Bi2O3-PbO-MgO-B2O3 and PbO-WO3-Na2O-MgO-B2O3 glass systems examined for radiation protection application. The simulation results for radiation shielding by the MCNPX code were close to the results obtained from the XCOM database. The SBT-Tl glass among the synthesized glasses revealed the highest mass attenuation coefficient, lowest half-value layer, lowest tenth value layer, and highest effective atomic number. The results imply that the SBT-Tl glass is the best radiation attenuator in the present work.
