Abstract

A chronic mental illness such as bipolar affective disorder is a challenging task for caregivers especially in the current era of de-institutionalization. In India, few studies have attempted to directly determine the relationship between coping mechanisms and burden. Main objective of this study is to assess caregiver’s burden and coping among the caregiver’s of affective disorder patients and find the relationship between burden and coping. 100 caregiver’s of patients with bipolar affective disorder peoples were selected for the study. Purposive sampling technique is applied for the recruitment of subjects and questionnaire is used for data collection. Descriptive Statistics is used to summarize the collected information. Non parametric Statistics such as Man Whitney U test, Kruskalwallis test, Spearman rank correlation coefficient etc. are used for the analysis. Results of this study showing significant relationship between caregiver burden and coping. That means higher the coping, lesser would be the caregiver burden.
